The drainfield, formally the subsurface soil absorption system, is where treated liquid leaves the system and enters the soil. It works because soil accepts water at a certain rate and biologically treats what passes through it.
Failure is usually the soil losing the ability to accept water, from a biomat that has built up over years, from solids carried over out of an unpumped tank, or from compaction and saturation.
Repair is sometimes possible. Replacement is common on systems past 25 to 40 years. Which one applies is a question for a site evaluation, not a guess.
Ground conditions decide what a replacement looks like here, and Pierce County has three quite different situations. On the Graham, Spanaway and Roy outwash prairies, a conventional gravity replacement is often viable. On the till around Gig Harbor, University Place and the plateau, it frequently is not, and the answer is a mound or a pressure distribution system.
In the Puyallup, Carbon and White valleys the constraint is the water table in lahar sediment, which limits how deep a drainfield can go and can force an engineered design.
In the foothill towns, Wilkeson and Carbonado especially, shallow bedrock and steep terrain can rule out a conventional drainfield entirely.

Sometimes a system recovers when the real problem was solids carryover from an unpumped tank and the field is rested. Often it cannot. A site evaluation gives you an answer; product claims about restoring a field do not.
